Caterpillar MineStar

Caterpillar Inc.

Overview

Caterpillar MineStar is Caterpillar Inc.’s suite of mining technology solutions, spanning fleet management, autonomous haulage, and mine operations management. For an overview of the full product line, see the MineStar Solutions page.

MineStar Fleet

MineStar Fleet is Caterpillar’s core fleet management system. It works with any brand of equipment — not just Cat machines — making it viable for mixed fleets. Core capabilities include:

  • Real-time fleet tracking and dispatch optimisation
  • Automated material tracking from source to destination
  • Production monitoring and reporting
  • Equipment health monitoring integration
  • Integration across the broader MineStar ecosystem (Terrain, Detect, Edge, Command)

MineStar Terrain

MineStar Terrain provides high-precision machine guidance for drilling, loading, and grading operations.

Terrain for Loading

Terrain for Loading delivers real-time data to the operator cab on bucket positioning, bench height, ore body boundaries, and cut/fill volumes. It works with shovels, excavators, and wheel loaders from any manufacturer and integrates with third-party digger payload systems for accurate tonnage tracking.

Terrain for Drilling

Terrain for Drilling uses GNSS precision guidance to drill to an elevation rather than a depth, producing predictable and consistent shot results. Hole-to-hole updates show real-time progress of other holes in the same pattern, allowing drillers to coordinate without leaving the cab. The result is reduced survey work and improved fragmentation consistency.

MineStar Detect

MineStar Detect is Caterpillar’s safety technology suite, designed to work across equipment brands:

  • Proximity Awareness — peer-to-peer communication that warns operators when vehicle paths are about to intersect. Does not require a site-wide network to function.
  • Object Detection — radar and camera systems that identify objects in the machine’s working zone.
  • Personnel Detection — transmitter-based alerts that warn operators when personnel are nearby.
  • Driver Safety System (DSS) — camera-based fatigue and distraction monitoring that triggers seat vibration and audio alerts when it detects operator inattention.

Detect also has an underground variant tailored to confined-space operations.

MineStar Edge

MineStar Edge is a cloud-based subscription platform that requires no on-site servers. It includes:

  • Equipment Tracking — tracks all mobile assets from any manufacturer across the site.
  • Production Recording — automated load-haul-dump cycle data capture without operator input.
  • MineStar Guide — next-generation high-precision guidance for grading and loading operations.
  • Surface Management — 3D visualisation of plan versus actual surfaces for real-time progress tracking.

MineStar Reporting

MineStar Reporting is a web-based data visualisation and analytics platform that consolidates data from Fleet, Terrain, Health, and Command into a single interface. It also integrates non-MineStar vendor data.

  • Standard reports for production, time utilisation, drilling accuracy, and maintenance
  • Custom dashboards with automated email distribution
  • Web-based access from any device

Command for Hauling

Cat Command for Hauling is Caterpillar’s autonomous haulage system (AHS):

  • 690+ autonomous trucks deployed globally
  • Operates on Cat 777, 789D, 793F, and 797F trucks
  • Mixed fleet capability — Command can be deployed on non-Cat trucks [1][2]

Cat Precision Mining

Announced at MINExpo 2024, Cat Precision Mining is a mine-to-mill optimisation initiative integrating MineStar with third-party sensor data across mobile equipment, processing plants, and fixed assets. Partners include Orica Digital Solutions, IMA Engineering, Stream Systems, Skycatch, and Information Alignment [3].

Command for Underground

Extending autonomous capabilities to underground mining:

  • Teleremote and autonomous operation of underground loaders
  • Line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight control
  • Integration with underground tracking systems

Deployments

  • Vale Northern System, Brazil — 14 autonomous trucks (320t capacity) expanding to ~90 by 2028, includes mixed fleet autonomy on Cat and non-Cat trucks [1][2]
  • Luck Stone, Virginia, USA — Autonomous Cat 777 trucks operational November 2024, first autonomous deployment in the aggregates sector [4]
  • Imperial Oil Kearl, Alberta — 81 autonomous Cat 797 trucks (2023)

Caterpillar offers deep integration between MineStar technology and Cat equipment, providing OEM-level data access and optimisation capabilities.
